Low Emissions and Sustainable Operations: The project is designed as an "electrified, low-emissions operation" powered by "clean hydropower". It aims for minimal surface impact with "no tailings or chemicals".
Reduced Carbon Footprint: The mine design incorporates a "fully electric underground operation without the use of diesel fuel," significantly minimizing exhaust emissions. Scope 1 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are projected to be very low, comparable to only four Newfoundland households annually.
Air and Water Quality Management: Air quality impacts are expected to be minor due to underground mining and the use of "fully enclosed" conveyor systems above ground to mitigate dust and noise. Surface water management measures are in place to divert clean water and contain runoff, preventing impacts on the receiving environment. No chemicals will be used in the salt production process.
Environmental Assessment and Baseline Studies: Environmental baseline studies were initiated in 2022 to assess water and ecology. An Environmental Assessment (EA) for the project has been "Released with Conditions". The project is subject to registration under the NL Environmental Protection Act.
Community Engagement: Atlas Salt has a long-standing history of community engagement in the St. George's region, building relationships and regularly interacting with the Town Council. They are committed to a comprehensive program of planned community and stakeholder engagement throughout all project stages.
Indigenous Relations: Engagement with Indigenous communities, including the Qalipu Mi'kmaq First Nation, is a priority for the company.
Local Benefits: The company recognizes key community needs related to employment and procurement opportunities, as well as social services.
Health and Safety: Establishing a comprehensive "safety plan and associated systems for safe and successful project execution" is a key aspect of their operational readiness planning.
Regulatory Compliance: The project's feasibility study is presented in a "Technical Report" that conforms to National Instrument 43-101 (NI 43-101) standards, ensuring adherence to established disclosure requirements for mineral projects.
Project Management: Atlas Salt plans to establish an "Owner’s Project Team" responsible for managing all project business, operations, health and safety, environmental management, permitting, and community relations.
Transparency: The company has actively provided industry and public updates on the Project's advancement through various phases.
